Welcome to techcen
The Association for Science Education (ASE) and the Design and Technology Association (DATA) believe that skilled and qualified technicians are essential to the work of their respective subject areas. This initiative is being developed by them to support their career structure and continued professional development in line with the requirements of Workforce Development.
A virtual centre "techcen" The Technicians' National Assessment Centre has been created. The centre allows technicians to access the qualification: “Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities” (LATA) NVQ which underpins the 4 level career structure: Assistant Technician, Technician, Senior Technician and Team Leader Technician. The qualification is aimed at the needs of both D&T and Science technicians. The advantage of the virtual centre is that it enables technicians to engage with the qualification without having to regularly attend sessions away from the workplace.
The pilot project has now finished and a smaller amount of funding from the Training and Development Agency has been secured until November 2008. The scheme is currently in its first year of national roll out , with technicians all over the United Kingdom taking advantage of partially subsidised places. Over 70 technicians have now graduated at level 2, level 3 or as qualified NVQ A1 assessors.
